Specialist, Advocacy (IN #1920-97)

The American Lung Association has a great opportunity for a Specialist, Advocacy to join our incredible team in the Upper Midwest Region. Working as a member of the Advocacy and Public Policy Team, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease, through research, education and advocacy.

In this role, you will be responsible for planning, implementing and evaluate campaign strategies for communities working on smoke-free air policies in Indiana. Primary focus will be working in partnership with municipalities to enact and implement policies and that increase the number of Hoosiers protected from secondhand smoke in public and in the workplace. This is a grant-funded position.


  • Provide strategic leadership for grassroots advocacy to local tobacco coalitions.
  • Exercise judgment and facilitate the building and development of American Lung Association partners and coalitions.
  • Plan and coordinate outreach and organization of meetings in order to build an effective, ongoing organization and to maintain the involvement of grassroots leaders.
  • Support advocacy efforts by facilitating the development of a policy advocacy strategy and tactical plans while coaching and mentoring partners to develop and maintain their internal capacity for public policy campaigns.
  • Train and mentor coalition leaders on a variety of topics including: member recruitment; facilitation and public speaking; planning; issue analysis; campaign development; advocacy; organizational development; and communication of recommended tobacco control best practices and campaign targets in meetings with policy makers.
  • Direct coalitions in carrying out advocacy tactics such as personal story development, supporter card collection, and earned media.
  • Manage the development and implementation of grassroots mobilization tactics in order to achieve desired policy outcomes.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations to community groups.
  • Develop organizing materials including talking points, marketing collaterals, flyers, fact sheets, etc.
  • Provide support for annual report, awards, grants, and other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and campaign experience required
  • 2-3 years of experience in issue-based, electoral, or other campaign organizing required
  • 2-3 years of experience in public policy research and implementation and/or non-partisan issue advocacy strongly preferred
  • Prior experience with municipal government preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with diverse audiences
  • Proficient in basic computer skills, word processing and use of the internet required
  • Must be a self-starter with excellent communication skills both written and oral.
  • Positive attitude with the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Required in-state travel to provide technical assistance, and attend meetings and conferences as required by the grant.
  • Ability to lift approximately 25 lbs. (supplies).
  • Able to work with minimum direct supervision, make decisions, and take initiative.
  • Proven ability to cultivate and steward relationships across a diverse population.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends with some overnights required. Must have a valid Driver’s license.
