The Nemours Children's Health System and the University of Florida are in collaboration to conduct trials in children and adults for the American Lung Association Airways Clinical Research Centers Networks under the leadership of Kathryn Blake, PharmD and John Lima, PharmD (Principal Investigators). The Nemours Children's Health System conducts pediatric studies at the Jacksonville (Drs. Blake and Lima) and Orlando (Tarig Ali-Dinar, MD, site investigator) locations and the University of Florida conducts adult studies in Jacksonville (Dave Cury, MD, site investigator).

The Nemours Children's Health System has had an active research program in pediatric respiratory disease since 1989 and has been a clinical site for the American Lung Association Airways Clinical Research Centers (ACRC) since 1999 and AsthmaNet since 2012.

Nemours Pharmacogenomics Laboratory in Jacksonville provides a repository service to the ACRC under the direction of Drs. Lima and Blake for genomic DNA specimens and other samples stored for future use that has been in operation since 1999. The laboratory is managed by Ed Mougey, PhD. Currently over 15,000 samples are stored.

Nemours Bioanalytical Laboratory in Jacksonville has provided laboratory analysis for specialized assays as needed for ACRC clinical trials including cotinine, urinary LTE4, genistein, and montelukast.

Each Nemours site in Jacksonville and Orlando has dedicated research space for respiratory research including examination rooms, vented rooms for methacholine challenges and sputum induction, and contiguous laboratory area for pulmonary function testing, and exhaled nitric oxide collection. All clinical coordinator staff are highly trained to perform these procedures. Each site has access to a Clinical Research Center for overnight stays.

Nemours has been a successful research site with consistently having participant randomizations well above targets, high level of racial minority participant recruitment, scientific productivity including grant writing and publications, and cultivating junior investigators.

The University of Florida has an active research program in adult studies of asthma, COPD, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis for over 20 years with large minority participation. They have dedicated research equipment for pulmonary function testing and CT scanning. Dr. Cury has busy clinic schedule and sees over 100 patients per week.
